Abstract
Following reports by Dr. Beard and Ms. Borel of the Pennsylvania State University and by Dr. Lukaski of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Grand Forks, North Dakota, at the 1988 annual meeting of the American Institute of Nutrition, the possibility of iron deficiency anemia influencing the ability to regulate body temperature was heralded in the popular press. Newspapers proclaimed in their headlines: “Hot Tips for Cold Bodies,” “Shivering Women Need More Iron,” “Iron in the Diet Is Cold Comfort,” “Lack of Iron a Chill Factor” and “Warm up with Iron.” Science writers, health editors and television commentators sought more information as they developed feature news items. In this first in a regular series “Behind the Headlines,” John Beard and Myfanwy Borel provide the readers of Nutrition Today with an overview of the research that generated this high level of interest. Keywords
