Abstract
A medical information system that is to be used as a source of data for epidemiologic research [of human occupational disease] requires more data than are routinely generated in occupational health programs. The quality of the data must conform to the standards required for research purposes. To meet these requirements, the system must supplement existing data by including other sources of medical information, demographic characteristics associated with the risk of disease, company population census statistics and comprehensive work histories. To insure the completeness and reliability of the data, the system should provide for case finding mechanisms, validation of diagnoses and cause of death statements, follow-up of terminated employees and data validation procedures. Keywords
