Abstract
The blood vessels of the eye are subject to the same pathological changes as blood vessels elsewhere. In arteriosclerosis changes occur in the tunica intima and tunica adventitia of the ocular vessels. In the retinal and uveal vessels the changes are more prominent at the posterior poles. The intensity of these changes varies greatly between blood vessels of the same region. The retinal vessels follow the renal rather then the cerebral vessels in pathological conditions. In 76 healthy individuals no arterio-sclerotic changes were found under 30 yrs. of age; between 30 and 40 yrs. some changes were found in the postciliary artery and the arterioles of the optic nerve; and over 40 yrs. the retinal vessels were also mildly involved. In 25 arteriosclerotics without hypertension the findings were similar to the healthy group, although the changes occurred at an earlier age. In 77 nephro-sclerotics with hypertension the retinal vessels were as frequently involved as the the other vessels. In 26 nephritics the findings resembled the nephrosclerotic group, although they occurred at an earlier age. There was also some edema in the adventitial coats of some vessels.
