GPS Performance: An Initial Assessment

Abstract
The Persian Gulf War provided the first major opportunity to apply GPS in a wide variety of combat applications. Furthermore, the war demanded intense and innovative ground segment operations to ensure that GPS availability was maximized for military users in the Gulf area. This paper reviews actions taken by Air Force Space Command to enhance GPS availability for Gulf War operations. GPS ranging and positioning performance characteristics (15 January–3 March 1991) for the Precise Positioning Service (PPS) observed during Desert Storm operations are also reviewed. A brief historical summary of position and navigation technology as applied to warfare introduces a comprehensive section on GPS use during Gulf War operations. GPS use in key Desert Shield/Desert Storm missions are highlighted.
