Abstract
In order to determine the effect of axial streaming on the distribution of 15-µm microspheres, and hence its validity in studying intrarenal blood flow distribution, renal blood flow and intrarenal blood flow distribution were measured in 4 newborn dogs using 9-and 15-µm microspheres. In 4 other newborn dogs, similar studies were done under polycythemic conditions (hematocrit > 65%) when the flow conditions might be altered. There were no differences in renal blood flow or intrarenal blood flow distribution using 9- and 15-µm microspheres. Thus from the present study, it appears that 15-µm microspheres reflect true intrarenal blood flow distribution in the newborn dog. Keywords
