Abstract
A new process has been developed for converting concentrated Kraft mill black liquor into clean fuel gas and reduced smelt. Bench‐ and pilot‐scale tests have demonstrated that the process can be operated to provide essentially complete conversion of the black liquor feed into fuel gas with a heating value of about 4470 kJ/m3 (120 Btu/scf) and smelt that is over 95% reduced to sulfide. Engineering studies indicate that the process can be used to fuel a gas turbine in a power generation system that integrates well with the requirements of a pulp mill. The overall process has the potential for higher efficiency, lower cost, and greater safety than conventional Tomlinson recovery boiler systems. Keywords
