Abstract
G. disomatus Skuja is found in several Ontario [Canada] lakes. EM of specimens from 6 lakes reveals a covering of scales which are identical in structure to those known for the coccolithophorid H. prenanti Lecal. Gyromitus shows no taxonomic relationship to Hymenomonas. The chemical composition of Gyromitus scales is shown by X-ray analysis to be Si, not Ca; smaller organic scales and a haptonema are not present. The original description of H. prenanti is incomplete and could well be Gyromitus. H. prenanti is probably a superfluous synonym for G. disomatus. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
