Abstract
A comparison of the biological activity of endotoxin with that of synthetic polyribonucleotides was undertaken in search of a nontoxic, practical adjuvant to the immune response. Although both products were effective adjuvants, the action of polynucleotides differed from that of endotoxin in that the former appeared to be mediated through thoracic-duct lymphocytes, causing a decrease in uptake of antigen by this cell, with little effect on formation of germinal centers. In addition, polyadenylic-polyuridylic acid complexes were found to be essentially nontoxic to mice, nonpyrogenic, and incapable of preparing for the local Shwartzman reaction.Keywords
