Abstract
This article provides a general overview of the critical issues and problems concerning the current and future status of the profession of sociology. The statement of the problem is delineated within a futuristic perspective that serves as the introduction to the remaining articles in this special issue of Sociological Spectrum. Issues in several areas are highlighted, including needed research on the sociology of sociology, meeting the challenges of the changing workforce, the enhancement and elevation of teaching, and the role and development of sociological associations. The challenge and futuristic theme of the article is stated in the form of the ancient proverb that warns us that “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”Keywords
