Abstract
Montane, subalpine, and alpine vegetation near Lake Shirley between Caswell and Charles Sounds, Fiordland, is described. Nineteen communities are recognised and grouped into five edaphic classes. The complexity of the vegetation is partly ascribed to the frequency of ecotones and, between 450–600m (1,500–2,000 ft), to interdigitating stands of montane and subalpine forest. Comments are made on modification of vegetation by deer (chiefly Wapiti) and a list of plants consisting of 67 lichens, mosses, and hepatics, and 167 vascular plants is included.
