COURSE OF DIABETES DURING PREGNANCY

Abstract
205 pregnancies in 152 diabetic women were studied. 67% became worse, 13% improved and 20% were unchanged during the pregnancy. There is an increased incidence of hyperinsulinism and a reduction in insulin requirement at 2-3 months; most cases of acidosis or pre-coma occurred at 7th month. Hyperinsulinism was not associated with fetal or maternal death, but a fetal mortality of 30% occurred in association with pre-coma. In almost all instances, no exogenous cause of acidosis could be found. Hyperinsulinism was not a result of vomiting. The author emphasizes the difficulty of estimating the status of the diabetics from usual clinical criteria.
