Family caregiving

Abstract
When families ask for help in caregiving, they look first to the physician. Although this request is usually worded in terms of how best to help the patient, inherent in this request is how the caregiver should cope with, adapt to, and manage the multiple demands of assisting their family member. Medical training generally focuses on the patient's problems and not those imposed on the family. Consequently, the majority of health care providers are largely unprepared to assess caregiver strain systematically or to intervene.
