A New Genus of the Meliolaceae on the Roots of Solanum Species

Abstract
DIPOROTHECA rhizophila Gordon and Shaw (Meliolaceae, Ascomycetes), a new black mildew occurring on the roots of Solanum melongena L., S. nigrum L., and S. tuberosum L. (potatoes) in Washington State is described. In addition to the rhizophilous habitat, the fungus is characterized by its ostiolate perithecia, the 2-septate nature of the ascospores, the disparity in size between the central cell and the terminal cells of the ascospore, the lack of constriction in the wall of the ascospore, and the presence of an apically poroid sheath around the ascospore.
