Abstract
A theoretical justification is given for the mechanism proposed by von Hippel to account for the electrical breakdown of the alkali halides. Values of the breakdown field calculated on the basis of the theory are found to compare favorably with those obtained experimentally. A critical comparison is made with another explanation of the breakdown proposed by Fröhlich. Keywords
