THYROID SCANNING USING THE GAMMA CAMERA

Abstract
Scanning time for a thyroid gland using a 3 by 2 inch crystal scanner usually takes about 12 to 16 min., provided there is an adequate count in the thyroid. Ordinarily, the oral tracer dose for thyroid scanning is in the range of 50 to 100 [mu]c of I131. With the same amount of radioactivity and by using the scintillation camera, the scanning time is about 4 to 6 min. The real difference between these 2 systems of thyroid scanning is the time required and the location of an anatomic landmark. Although with the scintillation camera, the scanning time is less than half of that using a mechanical scanner, the mechanical scan gives a life sized picture with a clear anatomic landmark. As far as the actual resolution is concerned, there is probably very little difference between these 2 systems. It is possible to demonstrate a nodule as small as 1.5 to 2.0 cm in diameter with either scanning system.
