Abstract
Exact duality transformations are used to study a three-dimensional lattice version of the de Gennes model of the smectic--nematic transition. It is shown that the partition function of this lattice model maps exactly onto that of a system of interacting dislocation loops. Analogies with other models are used to predict the behavior of this lattice model at several special points in the parameter space.
