Effluent Splitters for Gas Chromatography

Abstract
The construction of two effluent splitters for gas chromatographs (GC) and a method for collecting and transferring GC fractions are described. These effluent splitters provide an efficient, simple, and inexpensive method for obtaining samples from a GC on the micro- and submicrogram scale. The use of these splitters and the collecting and transferring techniques are exemplified with trimethytsilyl derivatives of mono- and disaccharides. Mass spectra and melting points are obtained for these collected derivatives. The effluent splitters described here are applicable to virtually any substance which can be separated by gas chromatography.
