Abstract
TRIS (tris- hydroxymethyl]-aminomethane), or THAM, is an organic buffer with distinguishing properties that have recently been of considerable interest to numerous clinical investigators. Among the buffers currently available for the correction of acidosis Tris alone can neutralize carbonic acid,1 and for this reason it has been recommended as a means of lowering carbon dioxide tension (pCO2) in patients with respiratory acidosis.2 3 4 Tris has also been proposed as a more effective buffer than bicarbonate for the treatment of metabolic acidosis,3 , 5 6 7 both because it is a stronger base than bicarbonate (pK 7.84 vs. 6.10) and because it is said to . . .This publication has 56 references indexed in Scilit:
