Abstract
Hidrosadenitis of the axillary glands was probably first described by Velpeau, who called it "abcès tubéreux de l'aisselle. The name "hydrosadénite phlegmoneuse" was given it by Verneuil in 1864. He had described it previously, as had Richet, Nélaton and Chassaignac. The disease is not uncommon, and it presents a definite clinical picture, but it is apparently not very well known, probably because it is hardly mentioned in most works on surgery in the English language, and is not mentioned, or is only briefly described, in many of the text-books on dermatology. This paper summarizes what I have been able to find on the subject in the medical literature. It is incomplete because I have been disappointed in having seen no cases of hidrosadenitis since I discovered that so few and so inconclusive studies have been made on the question of its origin in the sweat glands.
