The Fungus-Alga Association in Endolithic Lichens

Abstract
The fungus-alga relationship in 2 pyrenocarpous [Verrucaria spp.] and 6 discocarpous endolithic lichens [Catillaria sp., Protoblastenia metzleri, Sarcogyne pruinosa var. pruinosa, Caloplaca alociza, Caloplaca sp. and Catillaria reichertiana] was examined by transmission electron microscopy and compared with the fungus-alga relation in epigenous lichens. The mode of contact of the symbionts is essentially the same in both the endogenous and epigenous growth forms.
