Inbreeding in a population of meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus

Abstract
The level of inbreeding in a population of meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, was determined using a radionuclide–electrophoresis technique. Of the matings that successfully produced offspring, 36.4% were inbred. This value is much higher than other figures reported for birds and mammals. However, the level of inbreeding observed was equal to what was expected assuming random mating. We conclude that the voles in this population were not avoiding inbred matings.
