Abstract
Plasma calcium homeostasis in a lactating cow depended heavily on continuous intestinal absorption: plasma Ca declined within 5 h from 2.35 to 1.90 mmol/L when the cow was transferred from high (120 g, basal ration + abomasal infusion) to low Ca intake (20 g, basal ration). Prior stimulation of Ca absorption (1,25-(OH)2D3) did not prevent the hypocalcaemia. Key words: Plasma calcium, hypocalcemia, calcium absorption, lactation
