Abstract
An automated system for detecting the presence of hemoglobin S in both heterozygotes and homozygotes was developed to meet the need for a simple, inexpensive, and reliable method suitable for mass screening. Based on Itano’s solubility test, the system is capable of performing 60 or 120 tests per hour on capillary blood samples obtained by finger puncture. The required equipment includes a sampler, mixing coils, a proportioning pump, a colorimeter, and a recorder. The addition of an optional step of microhematocrit centrifugation permits differentiation between sickle trait and the more severe sickling disorders. Keywords
