Abstract
Experimental evidence supports the theory that inhibition of buds on the under side of horizontal apple branches is caused by the movement under gravity of substances from the upper to the under sides. Horizontal shoots of apple Crab C were split almost to the apex and the two halves separated by a non-porous plastic film. Where upper and lower sides were isolated by the plastic barrier, long shoots grew from the under as well as from the upper side. On control shoots, and shoots split vertically, most buds on the under side remained dormant. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
