Abstract
The study deals with the ablation gradient and not with the budget gradient, wich has been treated by several other authors. An analysis of the 20 year long series of ablation measurements on Storglaciären, Sweden, shows that the ablation gradient varies considerably from one year to another, that the ablation gradient is dependent upon certain meteorological parameters but that this relationship is very complicated. Observations from the Arctic, from Scandinavia and from Canada show that there is no clear relation between ablation gradient and latitude, but that the ablation gradient is strongly dependent upon the degree of continentality. Keywords
