A Longitudinal Study of Elderly Residents of Long-Stay Institutions: I. Early Response to Institutional Care

Abstract
This is a two-part article presenting data from a study of elderly residents in long-term care institutions one month and one year following admission. Following a nonstressful period of adaptation, residents expressed satisfaction with their situation. However, at both points in the survey there was increased dependency with low levels of activity. A significant number of residents were inappropriately placed, most of whom were receiving less care than they needed.
