Nutritional Requirements of Trichomonas vaginalis.

Abstract
A medium previously designed for testing effects of various serum fractions containing trypticase, serum, and a wide variety of added vitamins was used as the basal test medium. By reduction of the serum concn. to a minimal value and withdrawal of the vitamins singly and in groups a requirement for panto-thenic acid was demonstrated. Simultaneous reduction in serum and trypticase concn. revealed a requirement for phosphate. Adequate trypticase supplies the required phosphate. Other mineral salts tested were without effect. The salts in modified Ringer''s soln. were found non-essential in the presence of adequate serum and trypticase. A medium suitable for routine cultures, containing only serum, trypticase, cysteine, maltose, agar and water, was developed. This "simplified" trypticase serum medium was found wholly adequate for T vaginalis, T gallinae, and T foetus.
