Abstract
The relationship between the actual levels of independent variables to be used and the statistical precision of the estimated parameters of the reaction model is examined. A statistical experimental design procedure for selecting optimal settings of independent variables for parameter estimation is presented. This procedure can be of use to those involved with first-order reaction models and can be readily extended to more complicated models. The sensitivity to using settings of the variables slightly different from the optimal settings is examined. The use of replicate observations is also examined. The problems of lag reactions and nitrification are considered. Keywords
