Abstract
Philonthus cruentatus (Gmel.) was first reported in North America by Notman in 1924 from New York State and at the present time is known to occur in the east and middle west in most of the states north of Tennessee and westward into California. However, our last collections in the south were made in 1927 and it is possible that the species now ranges farther south. By its rapid distribution and abundance in many localities, it would seem that this will become one of our most common species of staphylinids.
