Colorado's Geography Standards: An Analysis of Preservice Teacher Preparation

Abstract
As content standards are adopted in grades K-12, preservice programs must insure that students are prepared to address standards in their teaching, especially where programs include only one introductory course. Faculty who teach introductory courses were interviewed, and preservice students enrolled in them were surveyed to determine if one course at the University of Northern Colorado was adequate for the task. The results of the study were used to pilot two introductory courses incorporating changes that strengthened both skills and content. Indeed, students received much of what they need to know from the introductory course. However, geography faculty need a greater awareness of the content standards. In addition, physical geography needs to bentegfated better with human geography, and more emphasis should be placed on the skills of analysis and application. The pilot courses accomplished both of these goals.
