COMPARISON OF RESPONSE TO INTRAVENOUSLY ADMINISTERED SODIUM TOLBUTAMIDE IN MILD DIABETIC AND NONDIABETIC SUBJECTS12

Abstract
In-travenous tolbutamide response tests were performed in 100 nondiabetic and 79 mild, stable diabetic subjects. Blood glucose level was determined at 20 minute-intervals for up to two hours after injection. Blood glucose concentration of nondiabetics declined rapidly to a nadir between 20 and 50 minutes after injection, rebounding sharply toward the pretest value thereafter. In contrast, diabetics, including those with a normal or near-normal fasting blood glucose level, exhibited a far more gradual decline toward a more distant nadir beyond the one-hour mark. Maximal separation of the two groups occurred at 20 minutes at which time the mean blood glucose level of nondiabetics had fallen to 60% of the pretest value, whereas that of diabetics had fallen to 90% of the pretest level.
