MÖSSBAUER STUDIES OF THE ISOSTRUCTURAL COMPOUNDS FeGe, FeSn AND CoSn

Abstract
Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of the hexagonal antiferromagnet FeGe have been undertaken in the temperature range 10-430 K. From the values of Bhf close to the ordering temperature the critical exponent β = 0.33 and the Néel temperature TN = 398 K were obtained. From the analysis of 57Fe and 119Sn Mössbauer spectra in FeSn, a more complex antiferromagnetic spin structure is suggested. The ferromagnetic ordering in the basal planes seems to be partly destroyed and the magnetic unit cell is then four times as large as the chemical unit cell. The temperature variation of the reduced hyperfme field for one tin position strongly deviates from the corresponding quantity found for iron. TN is found to be 368 K and the critical exponent obtained is 0.34. In CoSn no magnetic ordering has been revealed above 8 K
