Abstract
The effects of melatonm, 5-methoxy-tryptophol and pmealectomy on pituitary and plasma LH, FSH and prolactin levels were in-Melatonin vestigated in adult male castrated rats. and 5-methoxytryptophol were mixed with bees-wax (1:24) and a 25-mg pellet was implanted subcutaneously each week. Castration-induced rises in pituitary and plasma LH levels were not influenced by either treatment with melatonin or 5-methoxytryptophol, or by pmealectomy. 5-Methoxytryptophol, but not melatonin or pineal removal, lowered pituitary and plasma FSH levels in castrated rats. Castration did not induce rises in plasma prolactin; however, because of the hypertrophied pituitaries, they contained larger total amounts of prolactin. This was further augmented by 5-methoxytryptophol.Keywords
