Abstract
In an investigation of the coats of 30 cats and 87 dogs keratinophilic fungi were isolated from 25 (21.4%) animals. A subclinical infection with Microsporum canis was also detected. The “hairbrush” technique was used and in approximately 50% of cases hair was also cultured on moist sand. Neither technique seems completely satisfactory for detecting the fungi which apparently are not usually abundant. The results indicate that the greater the number of investigations the more are positive results obtained. Trichophyton terrestre was the most frequently isolated keratinophilic fungus and it occurred more frequently than can be explained by contamination from soil. Keywords
