Long-term dissociation of nursing behavior and the condition of the mammary gland in the rabbit.

Abstract
In Exp. I, 3 rabbit does were deprived of nursing behavior for 7 days after the induction of labor. Lactation was maintained by suckling in the unconscious state. When exposed consciously to their litters on Postpartum Day 8, no Ss displayed nursing behavior. Thus mammary distension is not a sufficient condition for the induction of nursing behavior. In Exp. II, 3 Ss, after 4 days of normal postpartum nursing experience, were suckled while unconscious by foster pups on Postpartum Days 5-14. Each day they were tested after recovery for nursing behavior with their own litter. It continued normally despite emptiness of mammary glands. Thus mammary distension is not a necessary condition for the long-term maintenance of nursing behavior. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
