Abstract
Aus den vorliegenden Versuchen zur Klärung dieser Widersprüche geht hervor: Efficacy ob arbutin, one of the main constituents of Folia Uvae Ursi (from Arctostaphylos uvae-ursi) as an urinary desinfectant, and its mode of action were investigated. After oral application of arbutin the glycoside is hydrolized rapidly and the resulting aglycone, hydroquinone, is consequently combined with glucuronic acid or sulfuric acid and renally excreted in this form. Arbutin is an effective urinary desinfectant if the following two conditions are realized: (a) The non–toxic glycoside should be given in large doses. (b) An alkaline reaction of the urine is needed because the active compound, hydroquinone, must be generated from its inactive esters. Much contradiction in literature concerning the suitability of arbutin and preparations of Folia Uvae Ursi for the therapy of urinary infections are caused by insufficient knowledge of the mode of action. Consequently the drug was often applied in an inefficient way. Keywords
