Abstract
Three methods for laboratory quality control were evaluated. None detected bad control during a period when the serum Na results were in retrospect totally spurious. These existing methods do not take into account factors which are shown to be operating in the hospital laboratory. These factors are: serum Na and chloride concentrations in hospitalized patients are lower than normal. The distributions are not Gaussian. There is great day-to-day variation in the patients studied. Keywords
