Abstract
Among 170 cultures of Eberthella typhosa 2 showed resistance to the action of several bacteriophages which were lytic for the others. A phage-absorption expt., using these 2 cultures, indicated that the difference was more than superficial, and agglutination studies revealed a deficiency in the somatic make-up of these 2 cultures. Cross-absorption tests showed that the missing antigen was not the one which E. typhosa shares with Salmonella schottmuelleri, but was one which is normally present in S. enteritidis. On the assumption that the somatic antigenic fractions of E. typhosa are limited to two in number (since there was no evidence to the contrary apparent from these studies) the component which was lacking was tentatively identified as antigen IX of the Kauffmann scheme of classification. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
