Abstract
Forty-one cases of malignant tumors of the nasopharynx that had been followed over a 5 year period are recorded. A combined oral administration of methotrexate followed in 5 days by radiation therapy with or without Co60 appears to be a promising approach. When irradiation therapy is instituted the types of tumor and the extent of spread play an important role in final outcome. Well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma offers much poorer prognosis than anaplastic tumors. The tumors that are confined to the primary site when ade-quately treated can attain 5 year survival in 54% of cases. This rate is reduced to 43% when the tumor spreads to the neck nodes. Ex-amining physicians are alerted to be cancer-conscious when con-fronted with patients with syndromes enumerated in this paper for an early diagnosis and to improve the present salvage rate.
