Abstract
In view of the increasing interest in the use of metronidazole for the treatment of anaerobic infections, interactions between this drug and other antibacterial agents have been investigated. In vitro, although the activity of metronidazole against Bacteroides fragllis was generally indifferent to the presence of other agents, it was potentiated slightly by sub-inhibitory concentrations of spirarnycin, rifampicin, clindarnycin and tetracydine, and to a considerable degree by nalidixic acid. Metronidazole did not interfere with the activity of 14 commonly used antibacterial agents against a variety of aerobes and facultative anaerobes. In vivo, added metronidazole did not alter significantly the CD50 values of 10 antibacterial agents against experimental Staphylococcus aureus and Esciterithia coli infections in mice. There appear to be no grounds to limit the use of metronidazole in the treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections on the basis of adverse interactions with other anti bacterial agents. Keywords
