Abstract
The Kohn-Hulthén variational principle is expressed in terms of the scattering operator formalism. It is shown that in terms of this formalism the principle can be expressed more abstractly and concisely than heretofore. Furthermore, certain ambiguities in the usual formulation of the principle have been removed. Keywords
