A Test of Erikson’s Theory of Ego-Stage Development by Means of a Self-Report Instrument

Abstract
The validity and reliability of the Self-Description Questionnaire was tested using undergraduate and graduate students. The history and development of the instrument are reported. The validity was examined by first identifying the propositions of Erikson’s eight ages of man upon which the instrument was based. The data were tested against three central theorems developed from the propositions. The findings showed the scales of the instrument to have high internal consistency reliability and that they were stable over time. The results of the tests on construct validity were all in the predicted direction with a majority at or beyond the .05 level of significance.
