Abstract
Comparative studies were made on the localization of diastase-fast periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive material and the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (AP) in the urinary tract epithelia of frog, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, dog, and man. In all species examined the superficial layer of cells bordering the lumen contained considerable amounts of diastase-fast PAS positive material, while at the same site AP activity was completely lacking. The deeper layers of the epithelium contained little diastase-fast PAS positive material. The AP reaction was prominent in the lower layers of the epithelium or in the sub-epithelial connective tissue, except in man. The findings suggest the possibility that one of the normal functions of transitional epithelia is the secretion of mucoid material. Keywords
