THE DETERMINATION OF Vud AND A TEST OF THE UNITARITY OF THE QUARK MIXING MATRIX

Abstract
The significant violation of unitarity implied by recently published results for the elements Vud, Vus and Vub of the first row of the quark mixing matrix is considered. A possible way out of the difficulty is described, which gives a different value of |Vud|. It involves close scrutiny of the calculated values of the nuclear isospin breaking correction δc to the ft values for superallowed β decays.
