Abstract
Using miscible displacement and tracer techniques, we studied the exchange and transport of cations in a soil column with a low exchange capacity. The case considered is one in which a labeled CaCl2 solution of low concentration displaces an unlabeled Ca solution of high concentration, initially present in the soil. It is observed that some labeled material breaks through around one pore volume, i.e., long before the adsorption sites available in the soil are saturated with labeled material. The theoretical model developed predicts the phenomenon adequately.
