Abstract
MMIC power amplifiers are a significant performance and cost driver in modern radar systems. Volume production is the key to controlling the processes and achieving repeatable high performance with high yield. Military systems alone cannot provide this volume. Westinghouse, therefore, as a world leader in radar systems has pursued commercial applications of power MMICs to generate the necessary volume. This paper will address the basic technologies developed for military systems and show how they have been modified or extended for commercial applications. Specific examples of FET and HBT technology applied to commercial, airborne, weather radars and to wireless applications will be presented.
