Abstract
Summary: An analysis has been made of the results of treatment of a series of 142 patients seen in a stress incontinence clinic. The problems of accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are discussed with particular reference to the differential diagnosis of stress and urge incontinence. Results of treatment have been analysed and show the relatively poor long‐term results for vaginal repair operations.Alternative forms of surgery are discussed and abdomino‐urethral suspension is advocated as the treatment for recurrent stress incontinence and also for the primary treatment of stress incontinence where prolapse is minimal or where continued long‐term increased intra‐abdominal strains are present.
