The Juxtaglomerular Apparatus as an Extra-Adrenal Site of ACTH Action.

Abstract
The effect of ACTH upon the intensity of granulation of the juxtaglomerular apparati of a series of young male albino rats was studied. ACTH was found to produce a state of hypergranulation within an hour of administration. After hypophysectomy, a significant loss of granulation was apparent in 6 weeks. The action of ACTH upon these granules was produced equally in the presence or the absence of the adrenals. Hypophysectomy was found to prevent the previously reported actions of vasopressin or of hydralazine in producing hypergranulation. It was concluded that the juxtaglomerular apparatus is an extra-adrenal site for the direct action of ACTH.
