Abstract
A study of error control by coding was made by Monte-Carlo simulation of a burst-noise channel on an IBM (International Business Machines) 7090. Using short group codes, comparisons were made between correction and detection with retransmission. Also, the effect of interleaving the code words was studied. Error detection with retransmission showed a consistently better performance than error correction and the time division resulting from interleaving was effective in combating burst type error patterns. Keywords
