Abstract
In GaAs lasers with a homogeneously broadened spontaneous emission line, spatial inhomogeneity of the inverted population can lead to multimode oscillation. In this paper the behavior of higher‐order axial modes of Fabry‐Perot GaAs lasers at 4.2° and 77°K is shown to be in good agreement with the theory of Statz and Tang, strongly supporting the model of spatial inhomogeneity. Since diffusion plays a prominent role in smoothing out these spatial inhomogeneities, the theory calls for, and the experiment verifies, that GaAs lasers must be pumped harder at higher temperature to produce oscillations in a given number of modes. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
